Astaxanthin Pharmacokinetics
The production of reactive oxygen species cause the damages
Many carotenoids obtained through the diet are essential to our health and well being throughout our lives. Although many of us know of the potential health benefits, the full mechanisms of uptake and distribution are not fully understood. Fuji Chemical Industry from Japan developed a procedure to quantify Astaxanthin in the blood. Furthermore, we looked at the absorption profile of Astazantin in the human body so that we can learn to improve optimum bio-availability of the this potent antioxidant in their future study.
EFFICACY
Only the free form of Astaxanthin is detected in blood. Maximum concentration levels were detected between 210-230 ng/mL. A single dose of 50mg or 12 mg per day showed similar peak concentrations in the blood plasma. A dose dependent response was observed between 2-12 mg per day. It took 4 hours for initial detection and a further 12 hours for the concentration to reach a peak of 228 ng/mL in the plasma. Afterwards, the concentration dropped dramatically to approximately 10 fold the initial concentration and then further declined from 28 hours onwards. The presence of Astaxanthin was still detected at 72 hours after intake. These results agree with other published data on Astaxanthin uptake.
